College Hill: South Beach

I LOVE College Hill. Yes, it's a horrible Real World knockoff on a low budget network (you know it's true), but it has got to be the most hilarious show I've seen all last week.

Last season was great - where else are you gonna see a guy rapping about making someone's "Booty Talk?" - but this season they're in Miami, my neck of the woods, where drama lives and breathes. Sure, the Real World may have a transsexual and a closeted Mormon, but they sure as hell didn't have a big gay bitch-out within the first ten minutes of the show. And they definitely didn't have a sad, clingy girl ironing a guy's clothes after only knowing each other for less than 24 hours. Plus, I went to the same high school as the "biracial and bisexual" girl, Allison, so that's fun to watch.

Tonight, there's gonna be some serious drama involving a co-ed shower, a pool stick, and sweet, entertaining tears. Looks like someone's going to get kicked off...

Watch (and love) College Hill: South Beach tonight @ 10 on BET.

Songs of the Week: Ratatat & Kings of Leon

Monica's Pick
Ratatat is coming to town and while I don't have tickets, I'm staying positive that I'll get there by listening to Classics on repeat. There's always one song off the album that grabs me and currently, Loud Pipes is it. Some indie rapper needs to sample this -- I mean Kid Cudi already sampled Tacobel Canon

Alex's Pick
I love Kings of Leon and this song is perfect. It's sultry and sexy and it's giving me dirty thoughts for this Friday (that's for another post). I can see why they're the hot band of the moment.

Full song available here.

Slacking

Yeah we've been slacking this week. Can you blame us? We're college students.

So to make up for the lack of updates, here's all the posts we would've had this week in one.

- Shia LaBeouf coming home to a nice little birthday "surprise."

- The new trailer for Spike Jonze's adaptation of everyone's favorite childhood book Where the Wild Things Are (you know you wanna see this).

- A hungry Pharrell Williams attempting to entertain soulless McDonald's workers in France.

- And here's a clip from Martin for nostalgia's sake. Best part's at 1:45.

In other news, big things are coming up on UBH, so stay tuned.

Songs of the Week: Violent Femmes & Jamie Foxx

Monica's Pick
If you've watched any TV in the last week, this song has been embedded in your brain courtesy of the constant Adventureland commercials. Now, not only did I just have to download the song, but I also really wanna see Adventureland next weekend. I guess advertising works.

Alex's Pick
I can't get away from this song which I don't particularly mind. It's catchy but I love this song because the video is wtf worthy. Ron Howard, Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker and Samuel L. Jackson at the club? Count me in.

Things That Need to Die: Bring It On Sequels

About ten years ago, I went to Target and bought Bring It On on VHS. My friends and I would recite the cheers in the middle of sixth grade English class. It was cute and funny and I still watch it from time to time.

Now, ten years later, they're still churning out straight to DVD sequels and each one seems to get progressively worse than the last. It's already bad enough E! fills up their empty time slots with Bring It On: All or Nothing, which has got to be one of the most apologetically racist movies that I've ever had the displeasure of seeing. And I've been avoiding the fourth sequel, Bring It On: In It to Win It, like the plague ever since I read about the movie's allusions to West Side Story. (Jets vs. Sharks? Seriously?)

And now there's a fifth -- Bring It On: Fight to the Finish.

"I don't speak Taco Bell menu." Still relying on racial jokes I see. You stay classy, Hollywood.

Throwback Thursdays: The Parent Trap

As I'm sure you're very well aware of, actress Natasha Richardson died yesterday after a skiing accident in Canada. In honor of her, I've decided to dedicate this week's Throwback Thursday to the first time I and many others my age met Natasha: almost 11 years ago in The Parent Trap.

I remember being in awe of her style, beauty and presence. Even as a 10 year old, you could just see how undeniably classy she was. Her death came so sudden and there are no words to describe what a sad tragedy it is.

R.I.P. Natasha Richardson.

3OH!3

Lieutenant Dangle has his own band?

Now ever since i've seen 3Oh!3's video on Fuse I can't get them out of my head. It's probably because they're area code is dangerously close to my own (305 what up!) but 303 is the area code of their hometown of Boulder, Colorado. Yes...Colorado, Oh Toto I don't think we're in Miami anymore.

They are the lovechild of Ludo and Say Anything(ugh). Don't Trust Me is a fun music video with a hint a douche bag and semi witty lyrics. There is no plot to the video besides lets try on all the outfits in the costume department and smash some shit.
Some of my favorite lyrics include:
Tell your boyfriend if he said he’s got beef
that I’m a vegetarian, and I ain't fucking scared of him.

and
Shush girl
Shut your lips
Do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips.

Now even I find that in poor taste.

They just finished touring Europe with Katy Perry. How..fitting.

Songs of the Week: Gabriella Cilmi & Right on Dynamite

Monica's Pick
Gabriella Cilmi is one of those VH1 ~You Oughta Know~ artists. Only she isn't some adult alternative Colbie Caillat-sound alike. The drums in this song is enough to make me love it. Her album comes out in the US tomorrow, by the way.

Alex's Pick

I was reading New York Magazine with Kate Moss on the cover when I saw a review on Greenpoint's Right on Dynamite which Lizzy Goodman describes as The Strokes if everybody did shrooms instead of cocaine. I couldn't find a more accurate description of them. They're performing this week at The Annex so be there or be square?

Throwback Thursdays: Smilez & Southstar

Where do you even start? Everything from their names to the song itself is just so...indescribable. All you can do is shake your head. Mostly because you know you liked it back in '02. Don't lie.

And tell me they didn't remind you of the "Hip Hop Dalmatians" from Brown Sugar.
Just replace the fur coats with track suits.

Bonus throwback!: They sampled the song from Marvin Gaye & Diana Ross' "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)," which is the jam.

Aaaand let's not forget disgraced rapper Ja Rule also sampled the same song that exact same year. So bad, it should be it's own post.

LJ Secret

Love PostSecret but wish you could read people's deepest darkest secrets daily instead of every Sunday? Well now you can. LiveJournal has their own version of Post Secret which is basically secrets from 14 year olds who get rejected from Post Secret because they're secrets aren't really secrets. Sounds kind of mean but it brings the lawlz.

I'm sorry, that's funny.

Hey Girl

Had a bad day? Ryan Gosling is here to help. At Fuck Yeah! Ryan Gosling, you can pretend you're having an unhealthy pretend relationship with the charming Mr. Gosling. He'll listen to your problems, make you laugh, and turn you on. But most of all, he'll give you that pick-me-up you need, girl.

They also have Fuck Yeah! Anne Hathaway...for whatever reason.

Songs of the week: Cat Power & Muse

Monica's Pick
Cat Power is kind of hit or miss for me. There are songs of hers that kind of blend into the background and don't strike a cord. Then there are songs where you have to stop what you're doing, close your eyes, and just listen. "Sea of Love" is one of those songs.

Alex's Pick
Anyone who knows me knows that I have an unhealthy relationship with Muse. Not one of those relationships where I will constantly shove songs and Muse-isms down your throat but pretty damn close. Maybe it's the anglophile in me but Muse makes amazing, larger than life songs which is why I thought it was appropriate that they were featured in The Watchmen trailer. This only makes me more excited to see the film.

Fun Fact: Matthew Bellamy wrote this song about Tony Blair.

Sleeveface

Hello, is it Mrs. Robinson you're looking for?
Yeah, corny.

I bet you've done it before - put your dad's Bob Marley record in front of your face and taking a picture for a laugh. How original. Well now, you can kill a few hours looking through sleeve faces all over the world in one place: the aptly named Sleeveface. There you'll find a few super creative ones: Richie Hawtin, Sonny Clark, Bonnie Tyler and the About a Boy soundtrack to name a few. And a few that are...gross and uncalled for. Ok, the last one was kinda funny.

Pick up some records at your local thrift store and go crazy at http://www.sleeveface.com

Dim Mak Night featuring Steve Aoki

Last friday night was just another night of me watching music videos. Jen and I had heard that Steve Aoki was going to be djing at Webster Hall and we had planned to go but I was feeling pretty lazy and I was contemplating just staying in bed. But Jen kicked my ass out of bed and we went. After bullshit at the door I learned two things.

1. Don't ever call back a "promoter" who promised to get you in for free. They will not stop calling you for the next three days.
2.Dont rely on what you read online. Always rsvp online and buy your tickets online.

We get inside and Webster Hall has three levels. Underground they have 80s and indie remixes with the hottest go go dancers. I spent the first few hours down there. Absolutely awesome. The main level is mostly rap and top hits and it was pretty cool in there except we kept getting humped at any random moment. Shit son I was just walking please get off my leg. We finally got to the top floor which is what I like to refer to as heaven. (See what I did there?) My God was waiting for me there, Steve Aoki. He was amazing and honestly there are no words to describe how awesome he is live. He is a fucking ball of energy and interacts with the crowd so well. You must see him live.

Robot Chicken

I've been laughing my ass off to this clip with Kathleen so if you see us out and about you'll see us randomly say "I'm just me!" with a big grin. This got started when Jen, Kathleen and I were having our 90s cheesetastic music party while doing homework and I played Hilary Duff and Jen wasn't feeling it at all so we had this discussion about her and that brought up the robot chicken clip. Seth Green is a comedic genius.

Yes I am a sick fuck in case you were wondering.

Nick Hoult finds Anne Frank a laughing matter.

Throwback Thursdays: Mariah Carey

I don't care what anyone says. If you were a preteen in the 90s then you listened to Mariah Carey and you loved it. I remember watching this video when I was 8 and wishing I could be a sexy spy like her while I was in my training bra. Mariah was on top and now she's...Mrs. Cannon. Yeah, I know that's really weird. Anyway this week's jam is Honey. My favorite part of the video is the Eddie Griffin cameo. Oh, Eddie Griffin...

Songs of the Week: Cage & Lady Gaga

Monica's Pick
Cage is fucked up. That would probably be your first thought if you've ever listened to any one song by him or read about his life. His music is kinda like a series of 4 minute horror movies, and I don't watch horror movies. However, when I heard Cage-superfan Shia LaBeouf was directing the video for his new single I Never Knew You, I decided to check it out. First listening to it, I thought to myself, "Oh, a nice little love song. That's different." Then I got to the last verse and just thought, "Oh." Still, I can't get this song out of my head and find myself replaying it over and over. I guess haunting would be the perfect way to describe it. Enjoy Cage's creepiness.

Alex's Pick
I've been in dance mode all week and I don't even know why. I guess I'm just super pumped that I get to see Lady Gaga at the end of the month. I've even begun a check list to be prepared for the concert.
-Blonde wig (bonus points if it includes a hair bow)
-Shades
-Control top pantyhose
-Anything from American Apparel
